What is Holistic Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations).  Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent --or live better with --injury, illness, or disability.

Holistic occupational therapy is officially known as Complementary Health Approaches and Integrative Health (CHAIH). Holistic occupational therapy dives deeper into and uses the mind-body-spirit connection to help promote health, wellness and prevent disease which has been researched with proven outcomes. In recent years, more research has demonstrated the efficacy of many alternative approaches therefore, more healthcare practitioners have been integrating a holistic approach.

What is Complementary and Integrative Health?

“Complementary” refers to a non-mainstream practice that is used in conjunction with conventional medicine, like using natural products or engaging in mind and body practices. For example, meditation and yoga are widely used complementary practices.

“Integrative health" refers to when conventional and complementary holistic approach come together in a coordinated way.  It emphasizes a person’s health and wellness with a focus on mental, emotional, functional, spiritual, social, and community aspects, such as considering stress management for health care workers or teachers. When used together, CHAIH can contribute to improved occupational performance of individuals in any context, from pediatric settings to skilled nursing facilities.
